The past couple of weeks have seen the final rounds of competition for a handful of Riverbank athletes finishing out their spring sports schedules. And they found success, coming home with some hardware in both track and tennis.
Track And Field
Riverbank junior Giselle Fernandez competed in the California Interscholastic Federation Masters Final 1600-meter race at Folsom High School on Saturday, May 24.
She placed first in the race, with a time of 4:50.11, about 15 seconds faster than her first-place finish in the same race the week before at the Sac-Joaquin Section finals.
She also competed in the 3200-meter race, finishing that one at 10:51.35. Although it was about 30 seconds faster than her first-place finish in the sections the week before, it was only good enough for seventh at the CIF Masters competition, still putting her in the top 10 in a field of elite runners.
Section Tennis Playoffs
Riverbank High Co-Ed Tennis had two rounds of Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs last week.
Coach Bruce Edwards reports, “Last week we sent players to the individual section tournament. Single elimination.”
On the first day, said Edwards, the Bruin mixed doubles team, consisting of Felix Pasillas and Noemy Torres, lost to a strong El Dorado team which consisted of their number one singles players.
“Our two players were numbers 5 and 8. Both first year players,” Edwards noted. “In girls singles, there was Nathalie Garcia. She won her first round against Turlock Christian 6-0, 6-1.”
In the quarter finals, she lost in two sets against the eventual runner up from Colfax.
“Nathalie adjusted her game plan for the second set,” the coach explained. “She played a very good second set after losing the first set 6-0. The second set she had her 5-4 with a set point at deuce that did not go Nathalie’s way and she lost 7-5.”
Prior to that, doubles teams for Riverbank brought home some honors for the season, with boys doubles Victor Jacobo and James Williams, and girls doubles Maya Williams and Emily Ramirez receiving medals.
Sports have now concluded for RHS athletes in the 2024-25 school year, just in time for graduation and classes letting out this week.
